Renovating period homes can be daunting, but for the Immaculate team it is a real treat. Recently we completed a bathroom renovation in Cannington, at one of the original homes in the area. This home is over 100 years old, so it was important to our clients and us that the original features were kept and highlighted throughout the renovated bathroom whilst updating and modernising the space. A real feature and important part of the bathroom are the period feature tiles which we carefully and lovingly restored to reuse throughout the new space. These tiles are also in the kitchen, making it even more important to keep in with the original features of the home. The old light switches are a reminder of times gone by and look great positioned against the old door handle and framing.
The bathroom invites you in with the statement piece claw foot bath tub- a classic bathroom staple which not only anchors the room, but ties the new and the old in nicely. The whole bathroom is most spacious, allowing the tub plenty of room whilst not being in the way. The swivel bath tap by Phoenix allows the tap to be stored away effectively while the bath is in use, it also adds a touch of quality to the bathroom. All tap ware and fixtures throughout the bathroom are black, which creates accents throughout the room. To keep with the original charm of the home, the fixtures chosen are antique in design but modern in function. All the black fixtures tie in with the striking black and white floor tiles that bring a touch of elegance with their old style charm. The feature tiles on the floor have also been repeated in the wall niche, this catches your eye the second you step into the space.
We removed two windows during the renovation so it was important to bring back in the natural light. You can never have too much natural light, we are big endorsers of sky lights (or sky windows) at Immaculate. The skylight installed allows plenty of light to flow in, accentuating the high ceiling in this lovely old home. Down-lights were also put in but neatly tucked away to ensure they didn’t dominate the space, as there was an exisiting pendant light which fits the original character of the home. A modern feature we brought to this bathroom which benefits this older home are the heated floors. Old brick homes tend to be colder and on cooler days heated floors in the bathroom really take the chill off; once you have heated floors you never look back!
This has been a memorable space to renovate for the Immaculate team, we have loved working with old period features to create a fresh, modern bathroom to last another 100 years!
